Will I develope a thicker accent if if I move then move back?

I live in Minnesota and I don't have any accent really, just my o's occassionally, but I want to go to college outside the Midwest and my German teacher said that if you go away for a while and come back you'll hear the accent more and imitate it more dramatically. Will this happen if I go away to school for a while? I really don't want a thicker accent...
