Question about the dolphin in 'The Old Man and The Sea'?

I'm about halfway through the book, during the second night at sea. For food that night, Santiago says he catches a dolphin... What? Aren't dolphins almost the size of a man? And he says dolphins are gold and they have purple spots and stripes... Am I missing something?
