What is the difference between calling the sea "la mar" or "el mar?"?

It's been quite a while since I read that book, but I believe it is an expression of artistic license. "La mar" would refer to the sea as feminine - gentle, calming. "El mar" suggests it is rougher, more rugged. At different points in the story, he perceives the sea in different ways.
